Meal Planner

Pick the week's recipes; the app turns them into one merged grocery list.

Customer

Parents who plan the family's meals each week, usually on a phone, often between other things.

Problem

Picking recipes is the easy part. Then come the chores: break each one into ingredients, merge duplicates across recipes, cross off what's already in the pantry, and write the grocery list by hand. That clerical work is why meal plans get abandoned by Wednesday.

Outcome & measures

Add a recipe by link or by a photo of a cookbook page, drop meals into a week grid for adults and kids, and get one merged grocery list that skips staples and remembers what you already have.

  • Recipe link to grocery list with no retyping
  • A cookbook page photo becomes a usable recipe
  • One merged list per week, quantities combined across recipes

What's next · Dec 2026

A faster way to repeat a good week, so a plan that worked can come back with one tap.

Why I built it

I watched the weekly routine and saw that all the effort came after the fun part. Finding recipes is a choice; turning them into a shopping list is clerical work a computer should do.

How it came together

The first plan was 15 tasks: a recipe parser, a quantity merger, a week grid and a shopping view. Within a week came photo import, structured ingredients, separate kid and adult portions, and recipe scaling.

What I learned

Building for someone else changes the bar. Every feature had to work on her phone, mid-errand, without explanation. I also learned to keep the app’s data backed up after a near-loss of the recipe library.
